On the Cusp of the New Year

link

Here we are....a new year is upon us.
I am not one to make resolutions. Never have, don't think I ever will. I figured out a long time ago that I prefer to live each day as it is, not putting any expectations on it.
Like today....the sun is shining. There is fresh snow. I have plenty of things I should be doing but guess what? I am going sledding. Because that's how I roll.
I hope you all have a wonderful day and if you are celebrating tonight, I hope you enjoy yourselves immensely. I wish you all a year of happiness, love and laughter! Hugs for you all! xo

Sewing....where am I going to find the time to do it all!

I just discovered (and purchased!) this pattern from Colette patterns. Whenever I find a stylish men's sewing pattern I snap it up. They are few and far between! I can't wait to make it for the Mister. I will make one in cosy flannel for the winter and some nice breezy linen for the summer....the possibilities are really endless. I like the vintage style of it. This shirt seems to fit a bit slimmer than most men's shirts which is excellent for my man since he is quite slim.
I also just got this book from a shop in Toronto called The Workroom. I would love to visit the shop if I ever find myself in TO. I really enjoyed emailing back and forth with the women who run this shop - they were super helpful and got this book to me lickety-spilt! The book is full of adorable clothes for little girls. It is all in Japanese but there are some stellar diagrams so I think I should be able to figure it all out.
Famous last words!
G and I are baking up a storm and are going to continue with that today. Hope you have a lovely weekend! xo

Pretty Frocks

Having a bit of a lazy day today. Last night was my staff party. It is always a good time. I work with really awesome people! To make a long story short, there is an open bar, lots of laughing, hilarious conversations, and I usually stay up way too late. I am wiped.
Sooooo....
I was cruising Modcloth and found some pretties :

This one comes in red too!

I must post pictures of myself in the dress that I made for the party last night. I forgot my camera at home so I didn't take a single picture!
This is what I am listening to right now. If you like drum and bass go have a listen.
Hope you are all somewhere cozy and warm tonight! xo

Birthday Boy

Today is the mister's birthday. He has to work all day - poor guy. But it gives me and G all day to do something fabulous for him.
First off, we will be cleaning the house.
Secondly, we will be making a birthday cake. Nothing chocolate or over the top because he is not that kinda cake guy. It will be simple. A mango upside down cake. His favourite.
Then we will be wrapping a couple of pretty sweet goodies and making a wicked awesome card. Complete with glitter, I am almost certain of it.
Then comes dinner. The mister loves all things pork. So on the menu for tonight:

Baby back ribs - I am going to make a dry rub for them and if I have time, homemade bbq sauce
Chili Rellenos - yum. That's all I have to say about that.
Warm potato salad, with the possible addition of some crispy bacon bits. I did say it was all about the pork, didn't I?
Green salad or maybe a nice sui choy slaw with lime.

My mouth is watering just thinking about this meal. I had better get on with it.
Happy Birthday, love! xoxoxo

Christmas Anyone?

I know....
Its not even December yet but today I started thinking about what sorts of gifts I would like to get for my daughter and nephew. My nephew is not quite one and when my daughter was his age I got her this little wooden bus toy. She loved it. She drove it all over the place, chucked it around and chewed on it. I'd say that is just about the perfect toy.
So I was perusing the wooden toy offerings on Etsy and thought I would share some of my favourites with you.....

Snow Day

The first real snowfall of the winter! G was so excited when she got up and looked out the window this morning. I totally remember that feeling. I must admit, winter is not my favourite time of the year. Its the cold and the lack of sunlight. I pretty much spend as much of the winter by the fire as I can.

We made some snow angels in the back yard and did some "snow chasing". Then it was back inside for a simple comforting lunch of grilled cheese and tomato soup. Mmmmm!
I have been doing a bunch of sewing for a little craft fair I am participating in. Doing up lots of little clutches. They are fun to make because they come together so fast. Instant gratification.
I also hemmed a gorgeous coat that I bought from this Etsy seller.

I got it in the spring when the thought of snow was so far off. I took about 5 inches off the length and it really made the coat feel more modern. Also, I'm a shortie so the length just overwhelmed me.
Hope you are all staying warm today! x

My kid is awesome!

She really is. As with any small child, she occasionally drives me completely around the bend. But she is a very cool little person. Here are a few reason why:

She loves (and I mean loves) David Bowie. She sings along.

She loves cars, hot rods especially.

She has a wicked air guitar stance. She puts up the horns.
She is funny. Really funny.

And smart.
She loves dinosaurs. The scarier the better.
This kid can draw.

She is really into lip gloss.
She gives amazing hugs.

And she is my daughter. She is the best thing I have ever done with my life.
I love you so much, sweetie. xo

...

We have been laying kinda low this weekend. I have been dealing with a shoulder injury for over a year now. Its doesn't hurt all the time, off and on depending on my activities. Digging in the garden really aggravates it. Hunching over a sewing machine for long periods of time isn't the best for me. Lately I have been hurting more than I haven't. I have been using acupuncture as my main form of relief. Stretching helps too. But last week I started seeing a new chiropractor - she is amazing! There seems to be some degree of physiotherapy in her treatment. I am optimistic. That is saying a lot as I tend to be just the opposite of optimistic. This weekend I have been feeling fairly good. Yay!
Did you notice my new blog button? Feel free to use it on your blog!
I wanted to share a finished garment with you - cutie pie pjs!

I got this super fantastic fabric on Etsy. I ended up reusing an old work shirt of mine for the main body of the top. The cuffs on the pants are from the same t shirt. I just copied an existing pair of pjs that G. loves. I used a 1/4 " seam allowance and the stretch stitch on my sewing machine. It is a combo of a long straight stitch and a zig zag. I think they turned out pretty wonderfully. I still have to sew on the neck binding, which will be in the owl print.
Today when I picked up my mail there was a little package for me. It was the Little Miss Death necklace that I got from this Etsy seller.

I love it! I believe the cameo is made from resin. I got to pick the colours, the setting and the chain length. This seller was fantastic! I will be shopping with her again!
I have been finishing up some knitting projects too - a new winter hat for me and I'm 2/3 finished with a vest for myself. Sometimes a little selfish knitting is in order. Pictures soon.
I hope you are all enjoying your extra hour of daylight! x

Spook-tacular!

The Wee Beast loves Hallowe'en. I mean, what's not to love about it? You get to get dressed up in some wildly amazing costume, go out in the dark and bang on people's doors, yell as loud as you can and then eat candy and stay up too late.
We decorated the yard and front of the house in the afternoon.

G said she was making the house spooky and wondered if it might scare people away.
Then we carved our pumpkins - the one's we grew!!!

They turned out "very spooky"...

In town, the place to go trick or treating is the mall. Its warm and here that is a good thing. We have been know to get snow on Hallowe'en so for the little ones warm is a big deal.

We met my brother, his girl friend and my nephew (the ferocious lion!) there for a quick lap then it was on to our neighbourhood for trick or treating in the dark. G raked in the candy. She is very good at the yelling part. We are going to let her eat some of it but are going to trade in the bulk of it for a toy or book of her choice.
So her costume...
...was freakin' adorable!
She wanted to be a bunny last year but with our renovations in full swing I just couldn't get it together to make her a costume. So we bought one. So this year she still wanted to be a bunny. I had yards of this white stretchy terry fabric (I got it at a garage sale for a buck). I made a hoodie and just tacked the ears on - maybe she will want to wear it without the ears? The puffy tail was just quilt batting. She was in love with the tail and kept sticking it out and giving her butt a little shake. It was hilarious! As soon as the costume was finished she told me she had to wear it and would I please put on some David Bowie so that she could rock out?!? That just cracked me up.
She is already planning her costume for next year.
T. Rex.
I think I have to start planning exactly how I am going to make that happen.

Fresh Ink

I started my half sleeve last week! I am so stoked! I have a Dia de los Muertos calavera on my arm already so my artist is working that into the sleeve.

My arm is going to be covered in beautiful flowers. Mostly peonies and poppies (they are my absolute favourite flowers) with a few columbines in there too. The ink is being done by Graham at Thunderbucket Tattoo in Nelson. He just did part of the outline, the flowers are going to go all around my arm and up to my shoulder. There will be a little bit of colour.

In other news....My Etsy shop was featured on Whitney's beauty blog. She is a huge Etsy fan and likes to give Etsy shops some exposure. Thanks, Whitney.

Speaking of my Etsy shop, I am going to be doing an update later today.

Enjoy your day! x
